Orijentacija 1 is a direct homage to a musical hero of mine, Simon Steen-Andersen. Inspired by his string studies, orijentacija 1 takes the format of some of his video works, with an aim to impact a player, mostly, as opposed to a viewer. My goal was to isolate the feeling of a dissolved self image, using light & dark, focus & silence, real & unreal. The piece can be performed in two ways: (1) two pre-recorded videos featuring violinist and a flashlight operator, placed side-by-side on screen, or in a hall, (2) a live violinist + flashlight operator with a superimposed mirror image of a pre-recorded performance, projected directly at the performers. My personal preference is the latter, allowing for a visual “situation” where the light source directed at the violinist may come from either the flashlight in real life or a recording of a flashlight coming from a video projector.
