“The foundation of Batina’s craft is complex, energetic, fluid counterpoint, with many sudden changes in rhythm, meter, and tempo… without a second wasted” – Mike Greenberg, 7/10/23, Classical Voice North America
Nicholas Batina is a Manhattan-based composer, violinist, guitarist, and arranger. His work is centered on expanding the frontier of group musical activity, incorporating technology into his compositions to free music from the bounds of notation in novel ways, often distancing himself from electronic music in favor of a traditional sound mediated by technology. Nicholas’ pieces intersect with the sciences at times, with recent projects such as • for solo cello (violin, horn, oboe, saxophone) incorporating EEG (Electroencephalography) to control generative video and live-electronics.
His music has been showcased across the United States and abroad, with premiers from artists and ensembles such as Frantisek Brikcius, Sommer Altier, Iwo Jedynecki, Polymorphia, the Rhythm Method, Hypercube, Trillium String Quartet, BlackBox Ensemble, the Viridian Quartet, Telos Consort, and Unheard-Of//Ensemble. Nicholas was featured as a Visiting Artist of Bang on a Can’s 2025 LOUD Weekend @ MASS MoCA for the second performance of icaro no. 1.
He holds a Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Arts from Florida State University, where he studied Music Theory & Composition and Commercial Music under Dr. Stephen Montague, Dr. Liliya Ugay, Prof. Brian Gaber, and Dr. Shannon Thomas. In 2023, he graduated with honors as a Master of Music Theory and Composition at New York University, with an emphasis on Concert Music under Morton Subotnick and Michael Gordon.
